I believe England coach Eddie Jones choice to move Owen Farrell into fly-half to get Saturdays quarter-final from Australia would be the most suitable one. Actually, so long as Henry Slade was inserted to replace him I believe that it was unavoidable. I feel because hes played extremely well in Japan, for George Ford, who has started every game of this World Cup at 10 – although maybe his previous form from the games has depended against him. From the number of enormous pressure games at global level in his profession he has perhaps slightly wobbled. It may be a little harsh on him since he is further down the line and more confident now. But certainly in the past when hes played in knock-out games with large decisions, I would not have necessarily said hed be my first pick. Farrell, together with Slade and Manu Tuilagi outdoors him was a combination during the Six Nations. It is a combination that the resistance struggled to find any change out of and that was quite threatening. It shuts down a lot of choices for the resistance in terms of where they could attack since Farrell is strong there – theyve got to come up with something. However there will be a question mark over Slade, who has not played with more than 40 minutes of rugby since May due to a knee injury. Will he be sharp? Surely on a Small run he had been through the Six Nations. He seemed dangerous . He ran encouraging lines, demonstrated toes and great ability – running in addition to kicking. That he read – therefore I like that mix. Australia are going to come out which England will not expect and have not seen before. It is a big shout putting. But it is his famous position – rather than the wing, where he has won his caps – so it isnt like him is throwing in at the deep end. Englands attention will be on Petaia, so its possible to guarantee that Australia are thinking about going someplace else and enjoying in a different manner so that England might need to update their defence. Theyre a bunch and England have to be about what Australia can deliver. The one surprise for me in the choice for Saturday of Australia is May Genia since I dont think hes been on good form, playing nine. I believe Nic White has been solid as a beginner and Genia has come on when the game is available. Theres the guy well squeeze if I was in that England aspect Id be thinking. They will need to try and place pressure on the ruck that Genia gets ball that is static also becomes a bit indecisive. I think that selection will be embraced by England. In addition, fly-half Christian Lealiifano and Genia have started together earlier. In contrast to Ben Youngs and Farrell, is a gap there. In the back row, Australia will should be sure that the expertise of David Pocock and captain Michael Hooper provides them an edge over England flankers Sam Underhill along with Tom Curry. But it may just ignite Underhill and Curry to be the stars of this World Cup. Should they get it right against Pocock and Hooper, who are around as the finest in the world as a partnership, the England boys will put their name in lights. Pocock and Hooper will soon be well aware that their standing is up for grabs along with this sport will receive all their attention and then a few. In each of these quarter-finals youre likely to find every ounce of work and experience – everything will be thrown out there. Nothing will be left to chance. Nothing else matters, Whenever you have built up to it for a few years. There arent any warm-up games, there is not any qualification from the pool. That is it. This is the reason they sacrificed themselveswhy theyve been playing as long as they own and they dreamt of out of when they were at school. Youve Pocock and Hooper who were around the block, played with big games, but not won a World Cup. Itll be their chance. Then you have gotten the young pretenders coming through who were probably inspired by Pocock and Hooper and want to shoot their mantle. The question hanging around Englands performances has always been, will they win the match if they are behind with 20 minutes to proceed? Needless to say, I would prefer England to not maintain that position. However, it might come down to the direction within the group. Youve Farrell as captain, however, who is the pack leader? It is not easy to state. If you ask eight people they would probably name eight unique players. When it comes to stress moments, one voice in the forwards has to make things happen. There are loads of players with more or 50 caps. They should be, by today, good enough in making those decisions. Its whether they do it at a quarter-final of the World Cup when theres no tomorrowno debrief. Its win and move on or move home. Matt Dawson was speaking to BBC Sports Becky Grey. A World Cup quarter-final against Australia is time for its Eddie Jones job to send, says former England scrum-half Matt Dawson. Do you frequently feel fatigued or short of breath?
