Apollcommissioned by the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health found that the majority of Latinas agree that women have the right to make their own personal, private decisions about abortion, countering popular narratives of Latinas as being socially conservative and anti-abortion. Latinas are much more nuanced and less sanitized than pundits, marketers and producers would like to convince you. Here are just seven of the damaging lies about Latina women common in American society today.

Additionally, we could not measure lifetime exposure to abuse with the WEB. Thus, the Any IPV (BRFSS and/or WEB) and the WEB rows of the table are not included for lifetime exposure. To establish period-prevalence for each type of IPV assessed by the BRFSS questions, women were first asked if they ever experienced each particular abuse type since age 18; if they had, they were asked if the abuse occurred during the past 5 years, and during the past year. To further comment on the type of abuse women reported, we defined two categories of abuse based on the BRFSS questions. Much of this trafficking is hard to detect, as it is not usually visible to the public or governmental eye. Currently, there are limited resources for Latina immigrants in the United States.

However, Latina entrepreneurship has grown immensely since the start of the 21st century. In 2011, 788,000 Latinas ran their own businesses, representing a 46% increase from 2006. Comparatively, female business owners as a whole only increased by 20% during this same time period. Immigration to the United States offers new economic prospects for Latina women. While many Latina women work outside the home in their countries of origin, their efforts in the U.S. often yield more economic benefits.

Because of this uncertainty, they sometimes do not feel comfortable sharing any personal information with people who are not family. Counselors need to reassure clients that their offices are safe spaces and what they share will remain confidential. Many families are brought up not to “gossip” or talk about personal or family problems with strangers.

Unfortunately, Hispanic women are subject to adouble pay gap—an ethnic pay gap and a gender pay gap. And, this pay gap widened over previous year when it “only” took until November 1 for Hispanic women catch up to non-Hispanic men. Many immigrant families cannot enjoy doing everyday activities without exercising caution because they fear encountering immigration officers which limits their involvement in community events. Immigrant families also do not trust government institutions and services.

Stop Using The Word “Caucasian” To Mean White

Policymakers who oversee apprenticeship registrations can both encourage increased equity in current apprenticeships, as well as expanded apprenticeships into new industries and occupations. All the while, policymakers must ensure that these apprenticeships continue to be paths to training while earning living wages. Collective bargaining agreements also mimic pay transparency by clearly defining pay scales for different positions.26 As such, pay gaps are lower for union workers. Similarly, banning salary history helps eliminate outright wage discrimination by preventing workers from carrying around lower wages as they change jobs.

Latinas are more likely to lack health coverage among America’s uninsured women, with more than 38 percent being uninsured. And while Latina women face significant health challenges, there have been a number of notable improvements. While some argue that Latinas arechoosing lower-paid professions, further education isn’t a panacea, as shown in Figure A. Regardless of their level of educational attainment or their occupation, Latinas are paid less than their white male counterparts. AdditionalEPI research on the Hispanic-white wage gapincludes analysis of immigrant status and country of origin. Looking at only full-time workers in a regression framework, Marie T. Mora and Alberto Dávila find that Latina workers are paid 67 percent on the white non-Hispanic male dollar .

Puerto Rico

Latino is traditionally reserved for males and Latina for females. A group of Latina women is termed “Latinas”, whereas a group of Latino men or a combination of Latino and Latina individuals are designated as “Latinos” (See Latino ). In a 2012 study, most Spanish speakers of Spanish or Latin American descent in the United States did not choose to use the terms “Hispanic” or “Latino” when describing their identity. Instead, they preferred to be identified by their country of origin.
